Ejiri, Fuchu, Mariko, and Okabe, from the series “Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Highway”

解説かいせつ

Utagawa Hiroshige 1856 ‘Ejiri’ illustrates probably a dress on a branch of a pine tree which is referring to the legendary tale of the Heavenly Maiden at Miho no Matsubara, the Pinewood Forest of Miho. ‘Fuchu’ illustrates the back of Geigi, a woman who can provide professional entertainment at a banquet held in tatami rooms, because there was a Yukaku, a licensed quarter, in the Fuchu Post Station. ‘Mariko’ illustrates a bowl with a roughened interior used for grating Tororo yam, a local speciality of the Mariko Post Station. ‘Okabe’ illustrates a scene of a mountain pass on Utsu-no-yama ―the Mountain of Utsu― located between Mariko and Okabe Post Station. Hiroshige produced many series of prints based on the Toukaidou Highway, and he also produced the different styles of work as this one. It is generally called “The Toukaidou with Harimaze-e (Paste the mixed pictures.)”, and three to five pictures of landscapes of post stations, local specialties and episodes or stories related to the places are illustrated in a single sheet.
