解説かいせつ

Utagawa Hiroshge 1855 The scenery of Satta Pass, which was located between Yui post station and Okitsu post station, is seen from Yui side. Satta Pass was known with its magnificent view of Mt. Fuji and in this picture, Mt. Fuji is seen behind the cliff. This picture makes viewers to imagine that the travelers, who climb the steep slope of the mountain pass, will enjoy the superb view of Mt. Fuji in the red evening glow from the top of the pass. Originally the Toukaidou Highway was situated along the ocean under the cliff, but it was a dangerous road where the wild waves washed the foot of cliff. The mountain pass where people can enjoy the great view of Mt. Fuji is newly constructed one. The series, “Views of Famous Places of Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou” was produced in 1855, when Hiroshige was 59 years old, and this is his last Toukaidou series. This series is also called “The Toukaidou in Vertical Pictures” since it is produced as the series of vertical pictures. It is considered the vertical composition is not suitable for landscape pictures since it is difficult to find the good balance in the space. However Hiroshige, the master of landscape pictures used this composition in a distinctive way, created the masterpiece series.
