Utagawa Hiroshige Production date:1851~1852 The scenery of people crossing the Sanjou Ohashi Bridge that spans over the Kamogawa River is illustrated. Variety of people from different classes and occupations such as ladies from imperial family who covers her head with Kyoto style kinukatsugi kimono, Oharame (woman vender who sells firewood by putting selling product on her head), and Chasen-uri (a monk who sells tea whisks) are crossing the bridge. Across the river, the city extended on the foot of Mt. Higashiyama can be overlooked. Utagawa Hiroshige produced more than 20 types of the Toukaidou Highway series. The Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway series “Gojyusan-tsugi (Fifty-three Stations)”, which will be exhibited in this exhibition, was published around 1852 (Kaei 5), in Hiroshige’s mature period. Since this series illustrated the large human figure with the landscape of the Toukaidou Highway on the back, this series known as “The Toukaidou with Figures”. |
