Utagawa Hiroshige Production date:1851~1852 Two women are picking up small blue flowers called aobana. Aobana is a variety of dayflower and often used for dying items since its vivid color was loved by many people. Utagawa Hiroshige produced more than 20 types of the Toukaidou Highway series. The Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway series “Gojyusan-tsugi (Fifty-three Stations)”, which will be exhibited in this exhibition, was published around 1852 (Kaei 5), in Hiroshige’s mature period. Since this series illustrated the large human figure with the landscape of the Toukaidou Highway on the back, this series known as “The Toukaidou with Figures”. |
