Utagawa Hiroshige Production date:1851～1852 A scene of Gonze-yama Mountain is illustrated. On the left, a huge rock that cannot be moved by a dozen people is illustrate. There is a legend that a person, who is purified can move this rock with a finger, Utagawa Hiroshige produced more than 20 types of the Toukaidou Highway series. The Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway series “Gojyusan-tsugi (Fifty-three Stations)”, which will be exhibited in this exhibition, was published around 1852 (Kaei 5), in Hiroshige’s mature period. Since this series illustrated the large human figure with the landscape of the Toukaidou Highway on the back, this series known as “The Toukaidou with Figures”. |
