 Tsuchiyama from the series Fifty-three Stations of Tokaido

解説かいせつ

 Utagawa Hiroshige Production date:1851～1852 It is looks like a scene of Suzukake mountain pass. At the foreground of the picture, a woman and a man are taking a break in the shade of a big tree. Utagawa Hiroshige produced more than 20 types of the Toukaidou Highway series. The Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway series “Gojyusan-tsugi (Fifty-three Stations)”, which will be exhibited in this exhibition, was published around 1852 (Kaei 5), in Hiroshige’s mature period. Since this series illustrated the large human figure with the landscape of the Toukaidou Highway on the back, this series known as “The Toukaidou with Figures”.
