Utagawa Hiroshige Production date:1851～1852 Situating the cycads planted at the courtyard of an inn at the foreground, this picture is illustrated with a composition as if to peep inside of the inn. A woman, who is just getting out of the bath is walking the narrow wooden edge of the veranda and having a pleasant chat with a woman who gets a massage in a room. Utagawa Hiroshige produced more than 20 types of the Toukaidou Highway series. The Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway series “Gojyusan-tsugi (Fifty-three Stations)”, which will be exhibited in this exhibition, was published around 1852 (Kaei 5), in Hiroshige’s mature period. Since this series illustrated the large human figure with the landscape of the Toukaidou Highway on the back, this series known as “The Toukaidou with Figures”. |
