Utagawa Hiroshige Production date:1851~1852 Under a cherry blossom tree, planted in the middle of the field, a hairdresser is setting a woman’s hair. Hiroshige also illustrated the cherry blossom tree with the pastoral Ishiyakushi region in his “Famous Places of the Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway” series, and this work was famous since Vincent van Gogh copied it in his work. Utagawa Hiroshige produced more than 20 types of the Toukaidou Highway series. The Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway series “Gojyusan-tsugi (Fifty-three Stations)”, which will be exhibited in this exhibition, was published around 1852 (Kaei 5), in Hiroshige’s mature period. Since this series illustrated the large human figure with the landscape of the Toukaidou Highway on the back, this series known as “The Toukaidou with Figures”. |
