Utagawa Hiroshige Production date:1851～1852 A man and women are having a pleasant chat with the background of the port of Yokkaichi. At the right, overcrowding ships that already furled sails are docked at the port and tells us the lively atmosphere of this port town. Utagawa Hiroshige produced more than 20 types of the Toukaidou Highway series. The Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway series “Gojyusan-tsugi (Fifty-three Stations)”, which will be exhibited in this exhibition, was published around 1852 (Kaei 5), in Hiroshige’s mature period. Since this series illustrated the large human figure with the landscape of the Toukaidou Highway on the back, this series known as “The Toukaidou with Figures”. |
