Utagawa Hiroshige Production date:1851～1852 A warrier is sitting on the floor cushion placed on a horse. The composition of the extending highway illustrated between the horse legs enhances the depth of space. Utagawa Hiroshige produced more than 20 types of the Toukaidou Highway series. The Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway series “Gojyusan-tsugi (Fifty-three Stations)”, which will be exhibited in this exhibition, was published around 1852 (Kaei 5), in Hiroshige’s mature period. Since this series illustrated the large human figure with the landscape of the Toukaidou Highway on the back, this series known as “The Toukaidou with Figures”. |
