Fujikawa from the series Fifty-three Stations of Tokaido

解説かいせつ

Utagawa Hiroshige Production date:1851~1852 On the sliding paper door, illustrated on the right, the words to indicates “kichin-yado” is inscribed. Kichin-yado was a low-priced inn and the customers who stayed at the inn had to cook by themselves. The customer paid the kichin, the fee for the firewood they used. Utagawa Hiroshige produced more than 20 types of the Toukaidou Highway series. The Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway series “Gojyusan-tsugi (Fifty-three Stations)”, which will be exhibited in this exhibition, was published around 1852 (Kaei 5), in Hiroshige’s mature period. Since this series illustrated the large human figure with the landscape of the Toukaidou Highway on the back, this series known as “The Toukaidou with Figures”.
