Utagawa Hiroshige Production date:1851～1852 A scene of the storefront of an inn is illustrated as if someone peeps in the inn. A woman customer is washing her foot in a tub and a maid of the inn is carrying her luggage. Utagawa Hiroshige produced more than 20 types of the Toukaidou Highway series. The Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway series “Gojyusan-tsugi (Fifty-three Stations)”, which will be exhibited in this exhibition, was published around 1852 (Kaei 5), in Hiroshige’s mature period. Since this series illustrated the large human figure with the landscape of the Toukaidou Highway on the back, this series known as “The Toukaidou with Figures”. |
