Utagawa Hiroshige Production date:1851～1852 Yoshida post station was flourished as a castle town and many inns and teahouses were built within this station. From the second floor of a teahouse, women are calling travelers walking on the street. Utagawa Hiroshige produced more than 20 types of the Toukaidou Highway series. The Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway series “Gojyusan-tsugi (Fifty-three Stations)”, which will be exhibited in this exhibition, was published around 1852 (Kaei 5), in Hiroshige’s mature period. Since this series illustrated the large human figure with the landscape of the Toukaidou Highway on the back, this series known as “The Toukaidou with Figures”. |
