解説かいせつ

Utagawa Hiroshige Production date:1851~1852 With the winding waves of Sea of Enshu on its back, two women, who collected pine needles are having a pleasant chat as they walk. The big pine trees that goes out from the frame of the picture is impressively illustrated.   Utagawa Hiroshige produced more than 20 types of the Toukaidou Highway series. The Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway series “Gojyusan-tsugi (Fifty-three Stations)”, which will be exhibited in this exhibition, was published around 1852 (Kaei 5), in Hiroshige’s mature period. Since this series illustrated the large human figure with the landscape of the Toukaidou Highway on the back, this series known as “The Toukaidou with Figures”.
