Utagawa Hiroshige Production date:1851～1852 The scene of travelers on ferries crossing Tenryu River is illustrated. The peaceful scene of crossing river is illustrated, and river looks calm, but Tenryu River was a river which often breaks its bank and known with its rapid stream. Utagawa Hiroshige produced more than 20 types of the Toukaidou Highway series. The Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway series “Gojyusan-tsugi (Fifty-three Stations)”, which will be exhibited in this exhibition, was published around 1852 (Kaei 5), in Hiroshige’s mature period. Since this series illustrated the large human figure with the landscape of the Toukaidou Highway on the back, this series known as “The Toukaidou with Figures”. |
