Utagawa Hiroshige Production date:1851 People climb the steep slope of the mountain pass are illustrated. Hiroshige illustrated the vivid contrast between the calm and cool woman’s face, and severe and tired faces of palanquin bearers. Utagawa Hiroshige produced more than 20 types of the Toukaidou Highway series. The Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway series “Gojyusan-tsugi (Fifty-three Stations)”, which will be exhibited in this exhibition, was published around 1852 (Kaei 5), in Hiroshige’s mature period. Since this series illustrated the large human figure with the landscape of the Toukaidou Highway on the back, this series known as “The Toukaidou with Figures”. |
