Utagawa Hiroshige Production date:1851 Tago-no-ura was a coast extended from Yui to Okitsu, and salt pans were built around this area. In fact, salt was a famous product of Tago-no-ura. Utagawa Hiroshige produced more than 20 types of the Toukaidou Highway series. The Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway series “Gojyusan-tsugi (Fifty-three Stations)”, which will be exhibited in this exhibition, was published around 1852 (Kaei 5), in Hiroshige’s mature period. Since this series illustrated the large human figure with the landscape of the Toukaidou Highway on the back, this series known as “The Toukaidou with Figures”. |
