解説かいせつ

Utagawa Hiroshige Production date:1851 Womens wearing yukata (casual wardrobe) are enjoying the view from the hot-spring hotel of Hakone. From the ancient time, Hakone was famous with its hot-spring, and many people went to Hakone for hot-spring cure during the Edo period. Utagawa Hiroshige produced more than 20 types of the Toukaidou Highway series. The Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway series “Gojyusan-tsugi (Fifty-three Stations)”, which will be exhibited in this exhibition, was published around 1852 (Kaei 5), in Hiroshige’s mature period. Since this series illustrated the large human figure with the landscape of the Toukaidou Highway on the back, this series known as “The Toukaidou with Figures”.
