 Oiso from the series Fifty-three Stations

解説かいせつ

 Utagawa Hiroshige Production date:1851 A woman traveler and the palanquins bearers proceeding along the Toukaidou Highway are illustrated with the great scenic spot Shigitatsu-sawa on their background, Utagawa Hiroshige produced more than 20 types of the Toukaidou Highway series. The Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway series “Gojyusan-tsugi (Fifty-three Stations)”, which will be exhibited in this exhibition, was published around 1852 (Kaei 5), in Hiroshige’s mature period. Since this series illustrated the large human figure with the landscape of the Toukaidou Highway on the back, this series known as “The Toukaidou with Figures”.
