Utagawa Hiroshige Production date:1852 The ocean view from Shinagawa with the women wearing kimonos in the foreground are illustrated. Shinagawa was the key place for the distribution of the products, and as if to emphasize the fact, a large wooden cart that carried the products is illustrated with the puppies beside it. Utagawa Hiroshige produced more than 20 types of the Toukaidou Highway series. The Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway series “Gojyusan-tsugi (Fifty-three Stations)”, which will be exhibited in this exhibition, was published around 1852 (Kaei 5), in Hiroshige’s mature period. Since this series illustrated the large human figure with the landscape of the Toukaidou Highway on the back, this series known as “The Toukaidou with Figures”. |
