Title: Parody of Chapter of Suma from “Tale of Genji” with a View of Enoshima Island in Sagami Province

解説かいせつ

Artist: Utagawa Sadahide This is a fan picture and mitate-e or a parody of “Tale of Genji” is illustrated. By referencing a boy clinging to a woman as the main character Genji, the scene from the “Suma” chapter, when Genji, the Shining Prince lost his power at court, and dismissed from Kyoto to Suma, is alluded. In ukiyo-e, the scene of Genji being attacked on his way to the ocean of Suma, on the day of Joushi in March for the purification ritual is often illustrated. It is considered the day of Joushi in March connected the story of Suma to the scene of Enoshima Island, since the date of Kaichou ceremony of the Enoshima Shrine often coincident with this day. Thus, this work was originated. Joushi: March 3rd, the day of Peach festival Utagawa Sadahide Bunka 4~ date of death unknown (1807~) Sadahide was a pupil of Kunisada I, active during Bunsei 9 to Meiji 8 (1826-1875). He exhibited his works at the Paris World Exposition that took place in Keio 2, and became the representative ukiyo-e artist in the exhibition. He won a first prize at the ranking of popular artists in Meiji 1.
