解説かいせつ

Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) and Utagawa Hiroshige II The production date: 1861 (Bunkyu 1) Publisher: Moriji (Moriya Jihei) Production date :1861 (Bunkyu 1) O-ban polychrome print, triptych At the foreground, a man who wears a luxurious kimono, a woman dressed in a maid style and a girl gathering seashells are illustrated. They came to Enoshima Island for pilgrimage and it seems like they came here by riding on the palanquins. These pictures are called “Genji-e” (the works that illustrate the theme related to the novel of “Tale of Genji”) but this picture is not directly based on the novel written in the Heian period. Instead, this picture was based on the characters of a goukan (a book complies of the serial stories with many illustrations) “Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji (False Murasaki’s Bumpkin Genji)” published during 1829 to 42, the work Kunisada partly participated by producing illustrations. The illustrated man is from the main character of the story, Mitsu’uji. In the story, he is an illegitimate child of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa. The background Enoshima Island is illustrated by emphasizing its height and the subana or the sandbar that connected Enoshima Island to the mainland is illustrated. With a large Mt. Fuji, this picture was recognized as a fine landscape picture of famous place as well.
