解説かいせつ

Artist: Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) The production date: 1844-47(Kouka era) Publisher: Nunokichi Toyokuni III became famous with the illustrations of goukan (a book compiles the serial stories) of “False Murasaki’s Bumpkin Genji” by Ryutei Tanehiko. In 1844, he succeeded the artist name Toyokuni (The pupils succeed the name of their teacher.). After that, he gradually dissolved his originality while he was involved with many artistic styles and work genres, and later his style became stereotypical. In this picture, three women with different poses are illustrated with the Enoshima Island and Mt. Fuji on their back. The woman at the left holds a flint in her left hand and a steel in the other hand . These are the tools to light a fire and she is about to strike the flint and steel to spark light. A woman on the right has a cigarette pipe kiseru, and she tied it with a red piece of cloth, a charm to avoid small pox. Both women’s items were the charms to pray for a safe journey.
