Artist: Kikukawa Eizan c.1818-30 (c.Bunsei era), Publisher: Yamaguchi The travelers on the way to pilgrimage to Enoshima Island are illustrated on the foreground and Enoshima Island and Mt. Fuji are situated on the background. In the picture, a woman master is situated at the center and the attendants and the naked local kids asking for something surround the woman. This composition can also be seen in the picture of Katsukawa Shunkou II’s landscape print of the pilgrimage to Enoshima Island. It is said that this work tells the custom of Edo period for contemporary viewers. The scene of a woman asking for light from a traveler is very interesting since it shows the treatment of cigarette of the time. Kikukawa Eizan Tenmei 7- Keio 3 (1787~1867) Eizan was trained under his father Kikukawa Eiji, Suzuki Nanryō and through Totoya Hokkei, he was also influenced by Katsushika Hokusai. He was active from Bunka 1 till his death (1804~1867). He was also influenced by Kitagawa Utamaro and produced pictures of decadent nuance beauties .Eizan was the founder of the Kikukawa school and artists such as Eiga, Eiri and Eishin were his students. |
