解説かいせつ

The landscape of Kanagawa post station, facing the Edo Bay, is illustrated in the background of this print. The figure illustrated in the foreground is Ichikawa Ebizō V as Watashimori Tonbei. Tonbei, along with Yura Hyōgo (No.62) and Ofune (No.69), are characters from the kabuki play Shinrei Yaguchi no Watashi (The Yaguchi Ferry and Magic Arrows). Tonbei and Ofune are father and daughter and are portrayed as contrasting characters. Tonbei is portrayed as a greedy man who attempts to capture Nitta Yoshimine for a prize, whereas Ofune selflessly sacrifices her life to save Nitta Yohimine, who she has fallen in love with.
