Goyu: Yamamoto Kansuke, from the series “Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Highway”

解説かいせつ

In “Honchō Nijūshikō” (The Japanese Twenty-Four Examples of Filial Piety), the rival Takeda and Nagao families are suspected of assassinating the Shōgun, and both families must hand over the heads of their trueborn heirs. In the third act, the Nagao family tries to make a retainer of Yokozō, a son of military strategist Yamamoto Kansuke who resembles their actual heir, Kagekatsu, so he can take their heir’s place. Yokozō's elderly mother (No. 45) asks him to become a retainer of Kagekatsu, but Yokozō reveals that he cannot take Kagekatsu’s place because he is actually already serving the Takeda family. At the end of the third act, Yokozō takes on the name of his late father, Yamamoto Kansuke. This painting depicts Yamamoto Kansuke, played by Mimasu Daigorō IV.
