Tsuchiyama : Akogi Heiji, from the series “Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Highway”

解説かいせつ

Sakanaoshita: Jirozō, from the series “Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Highway” No. 25 depicts Hiragawara no Jirozō, played by Seki Sanjūrō III. No. 26 depicts Akogi Heiji, played by Ichikawa Kodanji IV. Both works depict characters from “Seishū Akogigaura,” and the backgrounds are taken from the Hōeidō edition of the Tōkaidō series by Utagawa Hiroshige. Akogi Heiji fishes at Akogigaura, where killing is forbidden, to try to cure his mother's illness, and by coincidence obtains a treasured sword. He is threatened by Jirozō, who witnesses these acts, but it is revealed that Jirozō is actually a retainer of Heiji. In the end, Jirozō takes Heiji's place, taking the blame for violating the fishing ban.
