Minakuchi: Chōemon, from the series “Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Highway”

解説かいせつ

Depicts the main characters of “Katsuragawa Renri no Shigarami” (Love Suicide at the Katsuragawa River), Chōemon (No. 27) and Ohan (No. 28). In the play, Obiya Chōemon has an affair with the daughter of his next-door neighbor, Shinanoya-no-Ohan, though he is old enough to be her father, and Ohan becomes pregnant. While Chōemon still loves his wife, in the end, he and Ohan commit suicide in the Katsuragawa River. The actor portraying Chōemon is Sawamura Chōjūrō V. The actor portraying Ohan is Iwai Kumesaburō III, and the background depicts Ishibe-juku, where, by chance, she and Chōemon end up staying at the same inn on their way to Ise in the play. Both works have quotes from the Hoeido edition of the Tōkaidō series by Utagawa Hiroshige in the background.
