Nissaka, Kobayakawa Tatewaki:Tadanori, from the series “Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Highway”

解説かいせつ

Kobayakawa Tatewaki is a character that appears in Sanzenryō Haru no Komahiki (The Three Thousand Ryo carried by a Horse for the New Year), a story about the conflict surrounding the power struggle in deciding who will become Oda Nobunaga’s successor. Tatewaki is a vassal of the Oda family. The actor portraying Tatewaki is Seki Sanjūrō II. This was a posthumous portrait of the late actor. The background depicts the Nakayama Pass located near Nissaka post station. Travelers are stopped in front of a yonaki-ishi (a weeping stone) that stands in the middle of the road. Although the background in this print is set at night, its composition including the yonaki-ishi stone alludes to Utagawa Hiroshige’s print Nissaka from the Tsutaya edition of his “Tōkaidō” series.
