Yoshida: Yūgiri, from the series “Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Highway”

解説かいせつ

The kabuki play Kuruwa-no-Bunshō (Love Letters from the Pleasure Quarters) is also known under the title Yoshida-ya. A courtesan at the Yoshida-ya brothel named Yūgiri is bought out of her profession by a wealthy young merchant named Isaemon. This is a kabuki adaptation of the scene “Yoshidaya-no-dan” from the bunraku play Yūgiri Awa-no- Naruto written by Chikamatsu Monzaemon. Onoe Baikō IV (later Onoe Kikugorō IV) is depicted as Yūgiri and had been a popular onnagata actor known for their refined facial features. The Yoshida Castle, along with the Yoshida Bridge crossing the Toyokawa River are depicted in the background, and is thought to reference Utagawa Hiroshige’s print Yoshida from his Tsutaya edition of the “Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Highway” series.
