Okabe on the station :Tadanori, from the series “Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Highway”

解説かいせつ

Taira no Tadanori, like the figures of Mariko post station (No.15) and Okabe post station (No.16), is a character from the play Ichinotani Futaba Gunnki. He is based on the real-life samurai by the same name who appears in Heike Monogatari (The Tale of Heike), an epic chronicling the war between the Taira clan and Genji clan. Tandanori was a talented man excelling in military and literally arts. So much so that Okabe Rokuyata (No.16) regretted taking the life of such a talented person despite being enemies. The actor portraying Tadanori in this print is Ichikawa Danjurō VIII.
