解説かいせつ

The depicted scene is the famous “struggle for the carriage (Kuruma⁻biki)” scene from a kabuki play “Sugawara and the Secrets of Calligraphy”. Kanabohiki, a forerunner who announces the coming of another, tells Umeoumaru and Sakuramru that their father’s enemy Fujiwara no Shihei will soon arrive at Yoshida Shrine. The illustrated actor is Nakayama Bungorōu II. With his unique face, he was known as an actor who was good at playing the comic roles. Lake Biwa and the Torii Gate of Yoshida Shrine is illustrated on the background. Since Lake Biwa and Yoshida Shrines are apart, they cannot stand next to each other as in this picture.
