This print is from a series of illustrations featuring kabuki actors associated with post stations on the Toukaidou Highway, published in the same year as the sugoroku, The prints in this series are linked to the illustrations featured in the sugoroku squares. The figure depicted in this picture is Ishikawa Goemon, the most famous bandit in Japanese stories and legends. Anecdotes about Ishikawa Goemon were popular in ningyou joururi (puppet theater) and kabuki.
