Ōiso: Jūrō Sukenari, from the series “Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Highway”

解説かいせつ

This work is from a series of prints depicting actors, popularly known as Fifty-three stations of the Tōkaidōu with actors, produced by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) in 1852. The series depicts actors portraying Kabuki characters related to the post stations along with the scenery of the post stations. This work depicts the character Soga Jūrō Suketsune, who appears in the Tale of the Soga Brothers, as portrayed by the Kabuki actor Ichimura Uzaemon XIII (who later became Onoe Kikugoro V). In this print, the patterns of the garment worn by the actor features a plover, which is a signifying mark for Suketsune, and the neagari tachibana (a wild orange plant with roots exposed), which is the family crest of Ichimura Uzaemon. In the background is the station of Oiso, owing to the connection with Sukenari's lover, Tora-Gozen, who was a courtesan in that town.
