解説かいせつ

The actor depicted is Nakamura Kantarō portraying the character Ariwaraya Narihira from the 1851 kabuki play Sekainohana Ogurigaiden (Flowers of the World: The Side Story of Oguri Hangan). Although the character name is based on the handsome waka poet from the Heian period, Ariwara Narihira, this character is a “self-proclaimed” handsome man. Ariwaraya Narihira is a comic relief who is in love with the daughter of the Yorozu-ya inn owner, Okoma (No.5). In the background, a peaceful scenery of Hiratsuka post station is depicted with travelers heading to rest at a tea shop.
