解説かいせつ

This is a manuscript of the Illustrated Legend Scrolls of Kokawa-dera Temple. Located in Kokawa, Kinokawa City, Wakayama Prefecture, Kokawa-dera Temple is the third temple of the Saikoku Kannon Pilgrimage known as Japan’s oldest Kannon pilgrimage. As the legend of the principal Buddha of Kokawa-dera Temple, it illustrates the origin of establishment of the Kannon Hall, as well as the miraculous story of how the incarnation of Kannon Bosatsu cured the sick daughter of a wealthy man in Kawachi, whose deeply grateful family then became the temple’s Bettō (temple manager). The exhibited work is a manuscript by Ikai Shōkoku, Japanese-style painter from Kyoto (1881-1939). It is a precious material that illustrates the faith of people.
