解説かいせつ

“Nachinotaki Chikai-no-Mongaku” was performed by Ichikawa Danjūrō IX at the Nakamura-za in June 1889. After killing the wife of a colleague by mistake, Endō Moritō becomes the monk Mongaku. While he is carrying out ascetic exercises under the Nachi Waterfall in severe cold weather, Fudō Myō-ō appears, accompanied by Kongara-dōji and Seitaka-dōji. In the performance, Danjūrō played Mongaku diving into the Nachi Waterfall and then quickly transformed into Fudō Myō-ō. Danjūrō IX succeeded faith in Narita-san, visiting Narita-san Shinshō-ji Temple and dedicating an image of Fudō Myō-ō he drew before playing Fudō Myō-ō.
