Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III)

This print depicts a scene from the kabuki play Oguri Hangan Kuruma Kaidō that was performed at the Ichimura-za Theater. The cast for that performance were as follows: Nakamura Fukusuke I as Oguri, and Iwai Kumesaburō III as Terute-hime.
In this scene, an ill Oguri is pulled to the Kumano hot springs on a wagon by Terute-hime. In the sutra-based ballad of this tale, Oguri has died of poisoning and then resurrected. The Yugyō-shōnin finds Oguri and places him in the wagon. By the help of many people, including Terute-hime, he reaches Kumano.
Additionally, this work is a part of a series depicting the fifty-three stations of the Tōkaidō. As Fujisawa area was heavily connected to the story of Oguri Hangan, Terute-hime was paired with Fujisawa post station and Oguri with Hiratsuka.
