作者さくしゃ

Written by Saitō Gesshin / Illustrated by Hasegawa Settan

解説かいせつ

1834&1836 This is a topography of twenty volumes, describing the topography and famous places of Edo. The Saitō clan was a famous founding town administrator even before Tokugawa Ieyasu entered Edo in 1590. Begun by the grandfather Saitō Chōshū (Yukio), compilation of Tōto Meisho Zue was passed down to the father Kansai (Yukitaka) and then to Gesshin (Yukinari), who published it. It was titled Edo Meisho Zue upon publication. It describes the origin of place names, temples and shrines, ancient sites, and historical events spanning from Musashi and Edo to Sagami and a part of Shimōsa. Considered as a masterpiece since that time, it is still a first-class material for studying the landscape and customs of the Edo period. Gesshin is also known to have compiled the expanded edition of Ukiyo-e Ruikō, a record of ukiyo-e artists said to have compiled by Ōta Nanpo. The illustrator, Hasegawa Settan, was an expert of panoramic drawings and official painter of the Karatsu and Owari domains. Gesshin and Settan also worked together on Tōto Saijiki which describes annual events of Edo.
