Utahashi Bridge Near Egara Shrine in Kamakura

解説かいせつ

This is an ukiyo-e work which was printed privately, and not for sale. It is one of the series of fifteen prints. The title, Kamakurashi, comes from Shinpen Kamakurashi, chronicle of the tour of Kamakura by Tokugawa Mitsukuni in 1674. Utahashi in the title originates in the history of the warrior Shibukawa Kanemori, who was suspected of treason but forgiven after the shogun Minamoto no Sanetomo appreciated the waka poem he dedicated to Egara Tenjin in the Kamakura period. Kanemori later donated a bridge to the Nikaidō River in Kamakura, and the bridge became known as Utahashi (“bridge of poetry”). The first kyōka is believed to have lived in Mt. Ōyama in present-day Isehara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, as his name Sōshū Aburisan suggests.
