Kominato Dōchūki (A Journey to Kominato)

作者さくしゃ

Written by Yamaya Fukasoku Illustrated by Kitagawa Utamaro

解説かいせつ

This woodblock-printed book describes the journey from Edo to Tanjō-ji Temple in Kominato (present-day Kamogawa City, Chiba Prefecture). Tanjō-ji Temple was built by Nika, disciple of Nichiren, at the birthplace of Nichiren as Kōkō-san Nichiren Tanjō-ji, in 1276 during the Kamakura period. The honorific mountain name is Mt. Kominato. The book is known for its illustrations drawn by Kitagawa Utamaro right after he took his pseudonym. However, extremely few copies remain, and it is hard to find records of its exhibition, except for partial exhibition in a book by ukiyo-e researcher Shibui Kiyoshi. The postscript written by Ōta Nanpo also suggests a link to Tsutaya Jūzaburō.
