A Guide to the Best Buys in the Edo Capital

作者さくしゃ

Written by Nakagawa Gorōzaemon (Nakagawa Hōsendō) Illustrated by Katsushika Hokusai

解説かいせつ

This is a guidebook that presents some 2,600 restaurants and shops selling clothes, armor, medicine, etc. in Edo, published in Ōsaka. It also served as advertising for the stores and is said to have charged advertising fees. It was compiled with considerable enthusiasm, featuring the popular artist Katsushika Hokusai and writer Ōta Nanpo for the illustrations and preface, respectively. It became a best-seller and circulated across Japan. Although it was published after Tsutaya Jūzaburō passed away and his publishing house moved to Kodenma-chō, the mention of Shin-Yoshiwara Saiken Hanpon as a published book suggests that Tsutaya’s successor had taken over the business well.
