Kinsei Kisekikō (Thoughts on Contemporary Historical Sites)

作者さくしゃ

Written by Santō Kyōden (Seisei Rōjin) Illustrated by Kita Takekiyo

解説かいせつ

This essay is an investigation of common customs, anecdotes of people, information on historic places, etc. of the early modern period, based on old books and paintings as well as visits by Kyōden himself. Kyōden carried out a meticulous study while presenting his source materials. He cited numerous documents that are still used for research of customs and narratives today. Many of the events and people covered in this book also appeared in yomihon and gōkan books written by Kyōden during the Bunka years. It is a precious resource for studying the history of customs of the Edo period, alongside his unfinished, posthumous work, Kottōshū.
