解説かいせつ

Written by Santō Kyōden Illustrated by Utagawa Toyokuni 1812 Title: Danshichi Kurochawan Tsurifune-no-Hanaire Asachanoyu Chotto Kuchikiri This story is based on the bunraku puppet play of Natsumatsuri Naniwa Kagami (written jointly by Namiki Senryū, Miyoshi Shōraku, and Takeda Izumo, 1745). It talks about a samurai heir disowned by his family for falling in love with a courtesan, as he tries to achieve success and return home while staying with Danshichi, his father’s former vassal who now sells fish. One of the characters, Chotto Tokubei, appears as a puppeteer from Ōsaka to present that Kurahashi Gorobei, late father of Utagawa Toyokuni who drew illustrations for this work, was an expert puppeteer of portraits of actors. The inevitability of Toyokuni taking after his father and excelling in ukiyo-e portraits of actors is explained at the beginning of the book. This work is also known as a precious record for learning about Toyokuni’s life.
