View of Foreign Merchant Houses in Yokohama

解説かいせつ

People including a Westerner on a horse and a dress-clad woman pushing a stroller are illustrated on the street lined with Western-style buildings. This work was created in 1868. There were two foreign settlements in Yokohama: Yamashita Foreign Settlement (present Yamashita-chō and the eastern half of Nihon-ōdōri) and Yamate Foreign Settlement (present Yamate-chō). Yamashita Foreign Settlement developed as a commercial area with foreign trading companies, and Yamate Foreign Settlement as a residential area for foreigners.
