From the right, this work illustrates Kiyomizu-do, the zoo, and the Industrial Exhibition.
The Ueno Zoo opened in 1882 as a facility attached to the National Museum of Nature and Science in Ueno Park. The zoo then comprised mainly of Japanese animals which were collected for exhibition at the World Expo in Vienna. Since it came under management of the Imperial Household Agency in 1886, rare foreign animals such as tiger were collected. In 1888, an Asian elephant gifted by the King of Siam arrived at the zoo.
