Sugoroku Boardgame of Travel Along the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Through Poetry

作者さくしゃ

Totoya Hokkei

解説かいせつ

This sugoroku boardgame follows each post station along the Tōkaidō Highway. Artist Totoya Hokkei's seal can be found in the starting space of Nihonbashi. He was known for creating commissioned prints called surimono that were usually made for kyōka poems. From this, it is very rare to find a sugoroku by Hokkei. However, true to his roots, Hokkei includes a kyōka poem written by various poets about each post station with an illustration of figures and landscapes meticulously drawn in the lower half of each space. For the Fujisawa post station space, a traveler bathes in a goemon-style bathtub with a poem about how crowded the post station gets in the summer months due to pilgrims heading to Enoshima and Mt. Ōyama.
