In the Meiji period (1868-1912), westernization progressed and Japanese culture and customs changed, a phenomenon known as bunnmei kaika, or “civilization and enlightenment.” In this sugoroku, various vehicles, such as the steam locomotive, a symbol of bunmei kaika, and rickshaws are depicted on the game board squares. Depicted in the starting point square (bottom right) is a large gun carriage, and the ending point features an ox-drawn carriage. This sugoroku is a mawari sugoroku.
