The Minamoto-no-Yoriie, son of Yoritomo, also carried out a hunting trip at the foot of Mt. Fuji in 1203, recreating his father’s spectacle of a hunt. Nitta-no-Shirō Tadatsune, who had been a part of Yoritomo’s hunt, also participated in Yoriie’s. At this “great hunt”in 1203, Tadatsune was ordered by Yoriie to explore a cave they came upon. The scene illustrated in this print is the goddess Konohana Sakuya-hime (on the left), a goddess enshrined at Sengen shrine known for Mt. Fuji worship, appears in front of Tadatsune (on the right) when he entered the cave.
The name “Yoritomo” appears in the title, however, as the legend of Tadatsune and the hitoana cave is linked to Yoriie’s “great hunt” it is thought that the publishers had either mixed the historical hunts together or confused the historic figures during production.
