The Summit of Mount. Fuji in Japan

解説かいせつ

Utagawa Sadahide
1857

This print captures the peak of Mt. Fuji with a bird’s-eye view. The eight sacred sites for “Ohachi-meguri,” in which pilgrims walk around the rim of the mountain’s crater that has eight holy sites, are labeled in this work. The detailed labeling of sites suggests that this print also functioned as a guide map.
Sadahide had climbed Mt. Fuji. The details included in his works seem to include his observations from his own summit.
